Amity College Maths Cup – Sydney

On Wednesday the 31st of August Ali, Zac and Mohammad travelled to Sydney with Mr Prentice to compete in the Amity College Maths Cup. The competition featured 101 teams, with some of the brightest maths students of Grade 6. The competition featured three different rounds, each one testing students’ maths abilities in different areas – puzzles, number problems and general maths knowledge. The students performed very well, however they just missed out on the finals! Fortunately, this meant that we had time to do some sightseeing around Sydney! The students saw the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House before returning back to Melbourne. Well done boys!

Food Technology

An Electrifying Experience!

Year 7G and Year 7B students recently went on excursion to Scienceworks as part of their studies into forces and simple machines.

We watched the lightning show which had one student’s hair standing on end and which also gave everyone a surprise when the electricity produced a magnetic field that crushed a drink can. The Tesla coil was then switched on and students could clearly see where not to be during a thunderstorm. Stay away from trees when lightning strikes!

The show was followed by a workshop where students worked in small groups to build a model rollercoaster. It was quite a challenge as the rollercoaster had to include two loops and the carriage (represented by a marble) had to be caught in a container. Everyone had a great time trying to meet the challenge.

Sweet End of Year in Food Technology

Year 7/8 Food Technology classes made decorated cupcakes for their end of the year ‘sweet’ practical class. Students had the choice of decorating their cakes with ganache or butter icing. Some beautiful creations resulted!

In a combined effort with 7/8G Science Challenge, some Food Technology students were also involved in making rose syrup from fragrant rose petals and then using this to create rose flavoured Kulfi, the delicious Indian ice cream. The science behind this activity was the changing colours of chemical indicator extracted from the rose petals. The mixture changed from brown-pink to bright pink to purple to pale yellow-pink. These colour changes were due to the changing pH (acidity level) of the mixture as the process progressed. Everyone agreed the result was delicious!
